  1. So, I’ve always seen this game on the shelves at Frys and never gave it any thought. Then I was reading a music article that referenced how well the score was written for this game and that was the beginning for me.The music is phenomenal! There really aren’t words that can describe how wonderful and majestic it truly is.After listening to the Temple of the Ruins songs 800 times (literally) I looked up the trailer for the game. I figured it might be good. Instantly, there was this woman cursing and shouting and new music is introduced to me with the cinematics. By the end of the trailer BAM! It caught me Hook, Line and Sinker! (Kind of Ironic since there is fishing in the game 😉 I didn’t even bother with reading reviews at the time. It was on my list to buy for Xbox 360, which I barely play, but then I found out it was on PS3. Now I look for the right price and in 2 days of wanting it I have been sucked into all my favorite game worlds at once.Nier in my opinion are all of the great Japanese titles that everyone I know loves. Shadow of the Colossus, Zelda, Monster Hunter, and a Mature Rated Final Fantasy VII/X. If you could have that wouldn’t you want to play it too?My only quam for the game is when you zoom in on the father sometimes, the graphics are extremely blurry. That’s it. I love everything else about it. I started off playing it and doubted buying it at first, but the story was so ambiguous and mysterious it makes you want to play more so you can find out what’s going on. Plus, with the music playing in the background it makes it hard not to turn it off. Unless you buy the soundtrack, which is definitely worth owning. The songs stand on there own without the game. So, I recommend Nier to anyone who likes those games I listed in similarity. You most certainly will enjoy it!

  2. I struggle to give this game an accurate overall rating, because it’s very difficult. The story is the best I have ever experienced in Video games, bar none. Better than any Final Fantasy, even better than my old personal favorite, Silent Hill 2. I will not spoil anything, but I simply can not give the story enough praise! Whats even worse is it sneaks up on you, really hitting you with the true, full story upon New Game + (which starts you halfway through the game, with all your old weapons, items, etc). It is more than worth the second playthrough, just for the story alone. The audio is also among the best I have ever heard. Cavia put a LOT of work into this game, and it really shows. My favorite song is Cold Steel Coffin, an epic opera used as a near-ghost-town’s music. The graphics are about average, maybe slightly below. That being said, they aren’t distracting. They aren’t so bad as to ruin your immersion. They are fine, just not breathtaking. The gameplay is fun, but very repetitive. Cavia (the developers of this game) produced Drakengard and Drakengard 2 (and this game is actually based on one of the endings of Drakengard, though you don’t need to play Drakengard to enjoy this game). If you’ve played either of those games, you will know what you are getting yourself into, as far as gameplay goes. It’s a little different, but not all that much. Swords and Spells. No dragon riding this time, however.I’ve heard people complain about the controls in this game. I can honestly say, I don’t know what they are talking about. The controls handled just fine for me, though I will openly admit that there were a few moments throughout the game when the camera was an enemy. It’s mostly ok, but there are a handful of moments where you honestly don’t know if you are going to live or die, because you can’t see.And that’s why I struggle. The story and music are absolutely amazing, and if you are looking for a good story, look absolutely no further. But the combat, while fun for me, is admittedly repetitive. Rolling, blocking, sword swinging, and spell casting ad nauseum. If you are just looking for a fun hack and slash, this game would get around 3-4 stars. But if you’re into story and audio, giving it a 5 out of 5 is slandering it.As a personal aside, for the past 20-ish years, Secret of Mana on the SNES has held the title of “My favorite game ever.” It’s finally been replaced by this game. The story is THAT good.

  3. Amazing game. I didn’t own a PS3 until 2014 so I missed out on this gem. While it is by no means perfect, the story is well worth going through and took me around 24 hours played to get all four endings.Pros:+ Amazing soundtrack+ Story/Atmosphere/LoreCons:- Can be repetitive- Shallow combat

  4. Excellent story that murders your emotions and really is heart-wrenching. Great cast of characters, terrific voice acting and music. The graphics are pretty ugly even for the time it was released and the bloom effect is annoying. Fun but repetitive combat meets a need to get 100% of the game’s weapons the game to get all the endings but it is a game you NEED to play for the story and setting.

Overall, this game was a wonderful and tear-jerking experience. Music was amazing, even if there wasn’t a lot of variety. The story felt very gritty and realistic.Often times the choices you pick are based solely off your own morals, and there usually won’t be a reward or punishment either way. At first I found that a bit odd, since most games that have choices like to have direct consequences so that you feel directly responsible, but I found I rather like this better. It doesn’t train you to choose the ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ answer, because there is no right or wrong answer. You just have to think hard about the decision you think is best, and that way you’re not choosing something because you feel like you have to for an ulterior motive.Characters were complex and had decent development.Voice acting for main characters were superb, but all other minor characters’ voice acting was sub-par at best.Gameplay might not be the most original, but I had fun with it. Was in it more for the story, tbh.A lot of retrieval quests that have to do with luck, so a LOT of grinding. That might be my only major con. A minor con was Nier’s scary bird-like face. His face just doesn’t look right, especially compared to everyone else.Considering all that I’d say it’s definitely worth the buy.
